What to include on a cash receipt
The same core fields as any receipt — a receipt number, the date, who paid, what it was for, and the amount — plus an explicit note that the payment method was cash. That detail matters more here than on a card or bank-transfer receipt: a card statement already proves a payment happened, but cash leaves no trail unless the receipt itself creates one.
Reporting large cash payments to the IRS
If your business receives more than $10,000 in cash in a single transaction, or in related transactions, federal law requires you to file Form 8300 with the IRS within 15 days of the transaction, and give the payer a written statement by January 31 of the following year. Two or more related cash payments that add up to over $10,000 — not just a single lump sum — trigger the same requirement. This applies to individuals, partnerships, corporations, and virtually any trade or business, not just banks or large retailers.

Frequently asked questions
A card or bank transfer already leaves a record on both sides — a statement either party can point to later. Cash leaves no trail at all unless someone creates one, which is exactly what a receipt does. It's often the only evidence either side has that the payment happened.
